Megaselia scalaris is a globally distributed species of humpbacked fly (Phoridae) and is among the most common species in this group. Due to its extreme adaptability, it occurs in both tropical and temperate regions. In Switzerland, it is particularly prevalent in damp, organically contaminated areas such as sewage shafts, waste rooms, or sites where corpses are found. It is considered a hygiene and indicator insect, often pointing to serious decomposition or moisture problems. In medicine, it is known as a facultative cause of myiasis.
