The German cockroach is known as a stored-product pest that can also cause health problems in humans. It belongs to the family Ectobiidae, which is why it is often confused with the common wood cockroach. The German cockroach is nocturnal and spends 75% of the day in hiding. Despite an infestation, sightings are very rare; a large population could develop without anyone noticing. The oothecae (egg cases) are carried on the abdomen and dropped when the young cockroaches hatch. This is a typical characteristic of the German cockroach; other cockroach species do not carry oothecae (egg cases).
