The rock dove is the wild ancestor of today's city pigeon and naturally lives on rock faces and cliffs. In the city, it has transferred this lifestyle to buildings, bridges, and roof structures. Particularly in urban areas of Switzerland, it occurs in large numbers and is considered a pest due to the amount of droppings, noise pollution, and risk of disease transmission. Because of its strong attachment to nesting sites, it returns even after being driven away, making professional measures necessary.
