The European castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) is the most common tick species in Europe and a disease vector. It lives in forests, meadows, and gardens with high humidity and lies in wait on grasses or shrubs for a host, detaching upon contact. The European castor bean tick can transmit Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). After a bite, the tick can feed on blood for several days before detaching. Its life cycle includes larva, nymph, and adult tick, with each developmental stage requiring a blood meal.
