The European hornet is a common wasp species in Central Europe. Due to its size, the hornet has a threatening appearance, but it is rarely aggressive. Unlike the German or common wasp, the hornet only stings near its nest; otherwise, it flees from the perceived threat. The sting is generally just as painful as that of a short-headed or long-headed wasp. With its very dark yellow-black body, bright orange face, and enormous size, it is hardly ever mistaken for a wasp. It builds its nests in bushes at a height of 1-2 meters.

Due to their lifestyle, they are rarely aggressive towards humans, except near their nests. Currently, no wasp species is protected, including the hornet.
