Rice flour beetle (Tribolium confusum)

Size:

• Beetles: 3 to 4.5 mm long
• Larvae: up to 6 mm long

Look:

• Beetles flat and elongated with a brownish-reddish chitinous exoskeleton.
• Antennae with segmented club (no sharp demarcation as in the red flour beetle)
• Larvae light brown, slightly curved with two small tail bristles
• Possible confusion with the closely related red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum)

Way of life:

• Beetles are averse to light and prefer dark, dry storage areas.
• Larvae actively move within loose goods.
• Excellent climbers, they hide in crevices and packaging.
• Lifespan: several months to one year

Reproduction:

• Egg laying directly into the food
• Females lay up to 400 eggs during their lifetime.
• Development from egg to beetle at room temperature takes approximately 30 to 60 days.
• Multiple generations per year are possible

Infestation sites:

• Flour, semolina, breadcrumbs, pasta
• Grain residues, dried fruit, nuts
• Also pet food, dry food or baking ingredients
• Often occurs together with other stored product pests.

Nutrition:

• Preferably starchy, processed dry products
• It consumes both endosperm and outer layers and processing residues.
• It produces defensive secretions that alter the smell and taste of infested goods.
• Both beetles and larvae are actively voracious.

Behave:

• Highly mobile, also active in airtight containers
• Can penetrate through small openings in packaging.
• It hides during the day in cracks or under packaging.
• It climbs along walls, shelves, and even ceilings.

Economic damage:

• Product losses due to contamination
• Cleaning and renovation costs in industry and commerce
• Declining quality leads to complaints or recalls.
• Particularly critical in sensitive production areas (e.g. bakeries, commercial kitchens)

Hygiene risks:

• Increased germ count and risk of mold due to contamination
• Changes in the color, consistency, and smell of the products
• Residues such as feces, shed skins, and secretions make food inedible.
• Products must be completely destroyed.

Rapid spread:

• Dispersal through transport, packaging, personnel
• Within a short time, it spreads to entire shelves or storage rooms
• Often in combination with flour moths, grain beetles or mites

Disease transmission:

• Transport of microorganisms
• Concentration of foods

Storage hygiene:

• Store dry products in well-sealed, airtight containers.
• Clean pantries regularly and check for crawling insects.
• Check old goods for pest infestation before storing them again.
• Keep storage areas well ventilated and dry.

Monitoring:

• Set up sticky traps and beetle traps in storage rooms
• Visual inspections for dust residue, larvae or crawling beetles
• Temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius significantly slow down development.

Behave:

• Check and transfer newly purchased goods
• Do not store open bags or damaged packaging.
• Securely seal and properly dispose of infested products.
