The black garden ant is one of the most common ant species in Europe and particularly widespread in Switzerland. It is notable for its high adaptability and pronounced social behavior. Its nests are usually located in the ground, under paving stones, in crevices, or on building foundations. Near buildings, the ants often invade kitchens, storage rooms, or pantries in search of sugary food. Due to their mass movements and the creation of ant trails, they are often perceived as a nuisance.
