The brown rat, also known as the Norwegian rat, is one of the most widespread rodent species worldwide. It is characterized by its robust build, short, scaly tail skin, and dense, brownish-gray fur. Its tail is shorter in proportion to its body length, which distinguishes it from the black rat. It is an omnivore and prefers to live near water. It has a large home range (20–130 m) and can swim for kilometers.
