The raccoon is an intelligent, adaptable predator originally from North America that is increasingly spreading in Europe – including Switzerland, where the first stable populations have now been confirmed. With its distinctive facial markings (the "Zorro mask"), bushy ringed tail, and remarkable agility, it is often underestimated. Raccoons are primarily nocturnal, prefer to live near settlements, and can cause considerable damage. Their intrusion into attics, their droppings, and the potential transmission of diseases make them a serious hygiene risk.

First evidence in northern and eastern Switzerland (e.g. Schaffhausen, Thurgau, Aargau)
