Characteristics
Ants are social insects that live in complex colonies. In Switzerland, the black garden ant (Lasius niger) and the Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) are particularly relevant. The latter can cause serious hygiene problems in hospitals and care facilities. Ants can enter buildings through the smallest cracks, search for food, and spread germs. They pose a serious risk, especially in buildings where food is processed.

Signs of an infestation
An ant infestation usually starts inconspicuously, but develops quickly:
A typical sign is the appearance of ant trails along baseboards, windows, or door frames. The ants move purposefully between food sources and their nests. An infestation becomes particularly noticeable when food sources are discovered indoors.
Visible ant trails (even through several floors)
Small piles of sand or soil material at joints or wall connections
Ants in the pantry or on sugar bowls
Nest formation in walls, under panels, in the insulation material
Pharaoh ants: They also occur in winter, especially in warm rooms.
