Cockroaches & Fish
These insects are considered classic hygiene pests and prefer to inhabit warm, humid environments such as kitchens, basements, or bathrooms. Cockroaches are particularly resilient and can transmit pathogens. Silverfish, on the other hand, are less harmful, but are considered a nuisance when present in large numbers.
Characteristics
Cockroaches and silverfish are nocturnal, light-shy insects that prefer warm, humid, and dark environments. Cockroaches (especially the German cockroach, Blattella germanica) are considered dangerous pests because they can transmit pathogens such as salmonella or E. coli bacteria. Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina), on the other hand, are more of a nuisance, but can cause hygiene and aesthetic problems when present in large numbers. Both species feed on organic matter, glue, paper, or skin flakes and can reproduce rapidly under optimal conditions.

Signs of an infestation
An infestation of cockroaches or silverfish rarely goes unnoticed, as they are visible even during the day when their populations are high. Even a single insect seen during the day is a warning sign of a larger infestation. They are particularly common in kitchens, utility rooms, and bathrooms. Cockroaches can use even the smallest cracks as hiding places. Silverfish are often found in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and behind baseboards. Typical signs include:
Droppings or black spots along walls, shelves and appliances
Animals visible when the light is switched on (running away)
Empty skins or dead animals in hiding places
Oototheca (egg cases) in niches, behind appliances or drawers
Musty-sweetish smell in case of heavy cockroach infestation
