Characteristics
This group primarily includes mosquitoes, bed bugs, and fleas. They feed on the blood of humans or animals and can cause itching, inflammation, or allergic reactions. In Switzerland, they mainly occur seasonally or through introduction. Bed bugs are an increasing problem in the hotel industry and in rental apartments. They hide in mattresses, cracks, or upholstered furniture and can spread rapidly without targeted control measures.
Signs of an infestation
An infestation is often only apparent after repeated contact:
Bed bugs, in particular, are usually only noticed when typical bite marks appear. With mosquitoes, on the other hand, an infestation becomes visible through reproduction (e.g., near stagnant water sources).
Itchy bites, often in rows or clusters (especially with bed bugs)
Small bloodstains on bed sheets or clothing
Dark fecal spots on bed frames, baseboards, or electrical outlets
Visible insects or larvae in upholstered furniture
Animals that flee when the light is switched on (active at night)
